The CEO of the Basketball Champions League, Patrick Comninos, has clarified how current EuroLeague teams could fit into a future European basketball framework involving the NBA and FIBA.

“It has been made very clear in our communication with the EuroLeague that all the 13 licensed teams have a place in this new ecosystem,” Comninos said.

He also emphasized the BCL’s long-standing dedication to merit-based qualification, describing it as a core principle since the league was launched a decade ago.

“From the outset, we took tremendous pride in the principle that sport results do matter,” Comninos said. “European competition should be a reward for those who perform well at the domestic level.”

The CEO praised the atmosphere in Badalona during the Final Four and expressed pride in the league’s progress over the past ten years.

“We take a lot of pride for the steps the BCL has taken over the last ten years,” he added.

Comninos also confirmed that there would be no format changes for the 2026-27 Basketball Champions League season. He stressed the importance of stability, noting that “basketball is already confusing enough for your average fan.”
