In a stunning display of strategy and resilience, BMW claimed its first Hypercar victory in the World Endurance Championship with a commanding 1-2 finish at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday, fending off fierce competition from Ferrari and Toyota.

The #20 BMW M Hybrid, driven by Robin Frijns, Rene Rast, and Sheldon van der Linde, charged from 11th on the grid to win by 1.9 seconds. A timely early pit stop with a short fuel load propelled Rast into the lead by the end of the first hour, vaulting the BMW ahead of Cadillac and Alpine. From there, the German driver capitalized on clean air to build a substantial gap.

As strategy converged with just over two hours remaining, a safety car period neutralized the race, but strong stints from Van der Linde and Frijns had already cemented the lead car’s advantage. The sister #15 BMW—shared by Kevin Magnussen, Raffaele Marciello, and Dries Vanthoor—joined them on the podium after benefiting from the safety car and a clever pass by Vanthoor on Alpine’s Charles Milesi during the restart.

Two safety car periods in the final hour put Magnussen under intense pressure as he defended against Ferrari’s Antonio Fuoco, while Frijns pulled clear ahead. Fuoco, on fresher tires, remained within tenths of the second BMW, but Magnussen held firm to seal the 1-2 result, capping a perfect day for the German manufacturer. Fuoco and Ferrari settled for third.

BMW’s breakthrough at Spa marked a significant milestone. Since returning to the top class of sports car racing in 2024, the team had only managed two WEC podiums. Saturday doubled that tally in emphatic fashion. Starting 10th and 11th, BMW was not considered a pre-race threat, but the #20 car’s alternate strategy—pitting early to escape Hypercar traffic—allowed Rast to unleash its pace and enter victory contention.

Stint by stint, Rast and his teammates tightened their grip on the race. The late safety car periods required them to navigate a flurry of incidents before bringing the win home. Magnussen’s final-stint performance drew particular praise. Known for his aggressive defense and attack during his long Formula 1 career, the Dane never gave Fuoco an inch, despite the Ferrari running four fresh tires to his BMW’s worn set.

It was Magnussen’s first podium in any series since 2021, when he competed in the IMSA sports car championship. Meanwhile, Frijns, Van der Linde, and Rast earned BMW its first victory in the top category of global sports car racing since the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans.

All that fighting spirit was on full display Saturday, as Magnussen fended off Fuoco superbly. The result also highlighted Cadillac’s unraveling. After showing early promise—starting second and grabbing the lead on the opening lap—Cadillac’s race gradually slipped away, leaving it with a ninth-place finish.
